Is Logic Pro Free To Use Worth It?

Over the years, music production has evolved in unprecedented ways, with digital tools and software taking the center of the stage from analog gear. These days, digital audio workstations (DAWs) are the beating heart of any studio.

When talking about the best DAWs in the world, it’s hard not to bring Apple’s widely-famous Logic Pro to the conversation. Logic’s user-friendly interface, fused with an extensive library of high-quality effects, plugins, virtual instruments, and samples, makes it an exceptionally capable tool both for beginners and seasoned producers.

Compared to other professional DAWs, Logic Pro offers the best bang for the buck when considering all the included content that comes with the program. However, spending $200 without knowing if Logic is the optimal DAW for you is a risky investment that could leave you feeling frustrated and limited in your creative potential.

Many might not know it, but Apple released a free trial version of Logic for those who want to experience how it is before making up their mind about making their purchase. Without further ado, Let’s take a look at Logic Pro’s free trial and see if it is for you.

About Logic Pro’s Free Trial For Mac

Logic Pro is available exclusively available on the Mac App Store to purchase (and recently available on the iPad App Store as well). However, if you head to Apple’s website, you’ll find that you can download a 90-day free trial version for your computer.

The good news is the free trial model has all the content and tools you get with the paid version. Essentially, the only limitation coming with the trial version of Logic Pro is the 90-day time period. This means that all the projects you create within the trial app will still work in a subsequently purchased version of Logic Pro.

To install this 90-day free trial, your computer must be running on MacOS 12.3 or later. Moreover, you should have at least 6GB of available storage space for minimum installation. Installing Logic’s entire sound library can take up to 72GB.

How To Install Logic Pro Free Trial

To install Logic’s free trial, click here to go to Apple’s website and press “Download Now.”

Once you download the installation file, open it and double-click the installer package. You will be guided through the installation process. If youre using a previous version of the Logic Pro trial, youll be able to use this version for an additional 90 days.

All Logic’s recent versions are optimized to run natively on Apple Silicon chips. So, if you have a newer Mac with an M1 or M2 chip, you can enjoy Logic Pro with no problem.

However, if you want to use third-party plugins for creating music and they’re not yet optimized for ARM-based processors, you can open Logic Pro through Rosetta to open older VSTs. Here’s how you do it:

  •  Open Finder on your Mac and go to the “Applications” folder.
  •  Control-click on Logic Pro and select “Get Info.”
  •  In the new pop-up window, check the box next to “Open using Rosetta.”

Using Logic through Rosetta might make it boot up slightly slower than running it natively, but it guarantees all of your third-party plugins and VSTs work within the DAW.

Final Thoughts: Is Logic Pro Free To Use For You?

Logic Pro is a highly user-friendly DAW that makes making music easy and fun. However, that is not to say Logic is not a complex machine that advanced users can use to produce industry-standard songs.

Logic Pro can be an excellent choice for you if you’re a songwriter and need a program that allows you to quickly capture ideas and work on them. Moreover, since it comes with so many decent stock plugins, you can learn a lot about using equalizers, compressors, reverbs, and delays without spending a dime if you go for the 90-day free trial.
